Oral History interview with Stephen Jacobs, 2003 December 12.

The interview discusses Jacobs' graduate training at the University of Rochester, where he earned his Ph. D. in 1975, and his subsequent research on optical materials, devices, and manufacturing techniques with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE). He talks about developing liquid crystals for OMEGA'S Nd:glass system and the manufacturing challenges of high performance optics. He discusses the connections between LLE and the Center for Optics Manufacturing, which has developed many of the techniques for designing and building the lenses for the Omega. He recounts the origins of magnetorheological finishing and its applications to lasers and other optics devices.
